For generations, menopause in the African American community has been a transition navigated quietly – often in isolation and rarely discussed openly. While menopause is a universal biological milestone, Black women experience it through the added weight of cultural expectations, systemic health inequities, and the unspoken pressure to remain “strong” at all costs. To bring these lived experiences into the light, The Balm In Gilead, Inc., in collaboration with Astellas, conducted an in-depth survey of 338 African American women through its Southeast Diabetes Faith Initiative (SDFI) and African American Denominational Health Initiative (AADHLI).

Redefining the conversation requires more than just acknowledging the challenges; it demands a collective shift in how we talk about menopause, health, and support. Imagine, if we stop viewing “strength” as the ability to suffer in silence, what would a successful menopause journey actually look like?

Redefining the menopause journey requires us to dismantle the idea that suffering is a badge of honor. It requires us to demand better care, more conversation, and deeper support. The data gathered by The Balm in Gilead and Astellas provides more than just statistics; it provides a roadmap for our collective healing. By identifying the triggers that move us toward behavior change, we can begin to shift the narrative away from “hiding” and toward a radical prioritization of our own well-being.

By fostering open dialogue and sharing authentic experiences, we can dismantle harmful stereotypes and encourage women to prioritize their well-being. This redefinition also invites healthcare providers, families, and communities to actively listen, validate, and respond compassionately to the unique needs of Black women navigating menopause. Ultimately, changing the conversation empowers individuals to seek help, advocate for themselves, and reshape what it means to age with dignity and strength. Read more…
